About Brittany Kuntz

Brittany is an aspiring Young Rider who hopes to compete at the 4* level in the future. She is currently at the 1* level with her horse Heat Inndex and is aiming for the NAJYR 1* and 2* teams. Currently, Brittany is a premed college student and training her own horses and riding for a couple of clients.

Brittany was first introduced to horses at six months old by her mother, Lorie. A few years later, Brittany began her riding career while her mother was professionally training and starting horses in Arizona. Brittany’s roots began in Dressage and Western but soon sprouted into a passion for jumping after one summer jumping her Grandmother’s horse over a few fallen logs. Quickly she begged her mom to join Pony Club which led to buying their first OTTB “Sugar Hall” aka “Pete”.Pete is a 17.1hh Bay TB that has raced 76 times, with the last six being Steeple Chase. Brittany completed her first event at Beginner Novice in a Pony Club D-rated rally. She and Pete progressed rapidly up to 3’ jumpers and Novice Eventing. Sadly, Pete’s intense on the track experience prevented him from obtaining the level needed to be an Eventing performance horse, so Brittany and Lorie retired him and bought Brittany a wonderful Hanoverian mare named “Diva.”

Diva was a 15.3hh chestnut mare who had previously only competed dressage but showed a talent to jump. Within a few months Diva was jumping clean around 3’6 courses and quickly took to Eventing. Although dressage was tough for Brittany and Diva, they consistently went around clean show jumping and cross country.About two years after purchasing Diva, Brittany attempted to move her up to training but concluded Diva wanted to be a jumper. Brittany and Diva became Grand or Reserve Champions at every jumper show they competed in. Not long after, Lorie rescued a chestnut filly from slaughter via Camelot Horse Weekly. A few months passed and Lorie asked Brittany to ride the mare, Box o’ Chocolates “Coco”, and Lorie never got her back.

With the start of the 2012 season, Brittany focused on moving My Superstar Diva “Diva” up to the Training level. Diva and Brittany’s move up would have been the late spring culminating at the 2012 Maryland Qualifying Eventing rally. Unfortunately, Diva sustained a severe pasture injury June of that year, ultimately leaving our family with the hard decision to humanly euthanize her. Brittany was heartbroken. But, Brittany’s parents wanted to keep her on track so they leased a big grey gelding for the rest of the summer. Brittany managed, with only 4 practice rides, to take the grey OTTB gelding, Titanium, to the USPC Maryland Qualifying Rally at Waredaca and qualify for the 2012 USPC National Championships Novice Eventing team, where she and “Ti” finished 5th overall.

Brittany also continued building on the basics Lorie had invested in Coco, and by four and a half Coco was performing at third level dressage. Brittany attempted to produce Coco as an event horse after taking her to Redland Hunt Horse Trails. Coco received the best dressage score of the show with a 23.4 and won her division with clear jumping rounds. Given Coco’s exceptional dressage skills, it was decided to allow her to pursue that career. Brittany was on the lookout for her “super eventer” again.

Dex, also known as Heat Inndex, is a 17.2hh Oldenburg gelding. Brittany bought him as a rambunctious, high spirited five year old Dressage horse. Brittany and Lorie put countless hours into teaching Dex the ropes of Eventing. By spring of 2013, Brittany competed Dex in the MDHT starter series and won the high point after finishing all three events on her dressage scores of 30, 28, and 24. She took Dex out to Morven Park and Redland Horse Trials where they again finished on his dressage score, and finished top three. By spring of 2014, Dex was competing at Preliminary level and consistently winning the dressage phase. Their most notable achievement is winning Loudoun Spring Horse Trials in Open Preliminary, finishing third at Fairhill, and finishing fifth at MCTA. Finally in the fall of 2014, Brittany and Dex were Reserve Junior Rider Training Level Champions at the Area 2 Championships in Virginia. Ending the year with year-end awards with both USEA Area II Training and Preliminary level and MDCTA Training and above.

Brittany’s plans are to compete a 1* in the spring/summer of 2016 with Dex, and then move up to Intermediate with the hopes of competing at the Fair Hill 2*. With Audi, she plans on working her up the levels while preparing her for the Thoroughbred Makeover competition in October of 2015. The future looks bright for the OTM Eventing team!
